Although traditionally though
as dark and nearly magical, medical studies in the XIII century where
important and well structured. In fact, due to the meeting between two
different medical cultures (Christian and Arab) following the first
crusade, medieval medicine had reached a rather high degree of
refinement, both in the preparation af remedies and in surgery. In a
military encampment the presence of a barber-surgeon offered the
possibility to limit the lethal effects of battle wounds, cauterising,
sowing or, in dire cases, amputating. The tools of the barber-surgeon
where quiet varied, but mostly dealt with cutting and cauterising, two
techniques which combined together offered the surgeon a wide range of
operational procedures.
